WI No Molotov Ribbentrop Pact ?

What if Stalin didn't sign a pact with Hitler but instead chose the tripartite alliance ?

Let's say that the PoD is Livitnov not being replaced by Molotov (which put a stop to the negociation with Germany until a suitable Foreign Minister Deputy is found), and that the Wallies (the French Especially) managed to convince Stalin to at least stay neutral ?

Hitler was a gambler, He still attacks Poland. He wins but loses a little more than in otl.

I do not see Stalin actually intervening to protect Poland.

It could be that events in 1940 would change a little because Germany would be slightly weaker.

On the other hand if things go as in OTL Hitler starts of nearer Moscow but with less fuel and material and with a more alert USSR

"Stay neutral" is what the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact accomplished - and even Hitler knew that he needed that.

If he IS fool enogh to attack Poland without the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact, the Sovjets will make a similar pact with the Wallies - and Adolf doesn't live until Christmas 1939.

But I do see a Sowjet embargo against Nazi Germany - bought with a lot of French Francs and British pounds. That will be enogh to break Germany's neck.

I would say Germany wouldn't have fought against Poland. Germany was basically fueled by Soviet resources in the war, so with no pact, no stockpile of resources, and thus a more accommodating stance.

Germany attacking Poland without the Soviets taking the other half might proof to be a fatal mistake for the Germans. The Poles had big plans defending their country(Romanian Bridgehead) and the German army suffered way more losses then initially assumed. Casualties would have skyrocketed once the Poles had readied their defences. They migth still loose, but it will take a long time before germany is war capable again.

No invasion of Poland. I know I'm going to the vanilla bag of responses for this ("... and Hitler was crazy!", "... and they wanted lebensraum"), but I highly doubt the Nazis would gamble with a potential blowback from both west and east.
