WI no Mexican-American War

From what I can tell, the Mexican-American War was massively unpopular in much of the North and seen, quite properly IMHO as a naked land grab.

How could the war have been avoided and if so, what would the future ramifications be?

For example, would Mexico become a much stronger power in ATL with considerably more territory?

How would this have effected the Civil War and the events leading up to the Civil War?

Maybe you can achieve this if the Mexican Empire survives, and Iturbide manages to stabilize the domestic situation in Mexico. Basically, Porfirio Diaz one century earlier.

Without so much instability, the Texas Revolution will not even start (remember,it was part of a larger rebellion) and without it the United States might never have a chance to invade.

Mexico might become a great power in the americas, but not as a result of having more land, but instead a direct consequence of more stability in the 19th Century.
