WI: No Lebanese Civil War?

How could it have been avoided, and what would have been the effects (besides a prosperous Lebanon)? Simple as that.

France refusing to expand the boundaries of Mount Lebanon in 1920 to Greater Lebanon would be one POD. That gives additional territory to the British Mandate of Palestine.

Probably a lot fewer Lebanese emigrate to Australia as a result, which changes the demographics of some Sydney suburbs drastically (Lakemba, Campsie, Punchbowl, Merrylands and Bankstown) and butterflying away the Cronulla riots in 2005.

Get rid of, or drastically alter, the National Pact. IMHO, Lebanon's entire post-1945 political system was unsustainable in that it gave a certain portion of the population (Maronite Christians) dominance and left other sects-especially Shia-in the lurch.

This is a catastrophe for Australian popular culture, motor vehicle enthusiasm, slang, cuisine and the nascent Australian film industry. An absence of civil war in Lebanon is truly a dystopian scenario.

Or is it?

Instead of producing the vibrant and dynamic mid-outer urban Australian-Lebanese culture as the result of the interaction of Lebanese and Australian cultures—were the Lebanese who emigrated to Australia predisposed to the production of Austral-Lebanese culture? In this case, with the absence of civil war, a brash[1] suburban culture will come into being in Lebanon.

Some may argue this outcome is dystopian for the Lebanese in Lebanon.

yours,
Sam R.

[1] Arguably less brash than Anglos.

Commie is clearly referring to the effects on Lebanon, not to the Australian Film industry.

I would think that King Hussein’s expulsion of the PLO from Jordan in1970, and their relocation to Lebanon would have to be a critical factor. It is not the key factor but it is certainly highly significant.
