WI: No Land of Watches, Chocolates and Secret Bank Accounts: No Switzerland

WI the Old Swiss Confederation collapses no later than 1500 and OTL Switzerland never forms? What would become of Zurich, Bern, Geneve and Lugano? Would we see a tripoint border between France, Germany and Italy somewhere in the Alps?

I frankly have no idea, but I'd be much happier with the world as it is. I honestly hate Switzerland with the white hot passion of 10,000 suns. They're a bunch of smug little bastards hiding away in the mountains with way too much luck and money.

i guess the havenots can never be happy with hard working people around...

but on topic, we'd probably see most of it go to germany, with bits to france and italy. but, that's assuming that any of these countries exist as we know it if switzerland disintigrates in the 1500s

Austria would try to reclaim its original homeland in the northern part, and frrance and savoy or milan take the rest

It's not that I have I have much of a problem with their work ethic and wealth so much as they've never seen an invasion. Just their presence to me seems to scream out "Oh, look at us, we're so cool 'cause we're Swiss and we've never fought a war and just sit in our mountain mansions and watch the French and Germans fight with each other for random shit." The fact that they haven't joined the EU and took so long to join the UN also makes me think of them as a bunch of cocky, too-good-for-the-world bastards.

In short, their geography makes them look like a country of pretentious assholes

actually, the Swiss had a reputation of being invincible until Napoleon, seeing as how they kicked the shit out of everyone who came knockin'.

Its true the Swiss don't start wars, but they're pretty good at finishing them.

Wouldn`t some of them be able to form city states.

I think an invasion in the alps doesn`t really pay off for anyone. some might become part of Germany if it forms TTL. I`m inclined to think that due to geographic factors there`d be small independent states, not much more important than OTL san marino, lichtenstein or monaco, but still quazi or fully independent.

By that time the Old Swiss Confederation had to fight for its very existence as an almost independent polity from the HRE in the Swabian War vs. Maximilian I. If they win, the Confederacy would most likely have staid within the HRE and without the addition of other parts as Ticino or the League of Grissons or the areas of the Bishopric of Geneva (which only joined by the 1520s).

This victory would strengthen Maximilian and scare the independent princes, as the prince would have seen that Maximilian would and could successfully force his pro-centralization laws by invading rebellious principalities.

And what about the implications in a No-Switzerland World? Without Geneve where would John Calvin develop his religious views? How would Canada fare without the example of a true functional binational country? What would we do without Nespresso ??
