WI: No Helvetica

In 1957, it was created on the most - if not the most - ubiquotous typeface ever used, Helvetica, later joined by her clones, like Arial.

In the 60's it changed design towards a more clean format, adopted by corporations and governments, but in the 70's and 80's the rebellion against its use, leading to so called Grunge typography.

But - what if Helvetica have not been created in 1957? Would we still have the confusing typography of 50's adversiments?

Graphic designers actually have to work to choose a font, instead of just going with Helvetica. Advertising and posters will also look very different. Maybe the 1950s Modern look doesn't quite catch on, which causes Helvetica to not appear.

I mean, I've lost count the number of times I've uttered, "Just go with Helvetica!"

something like Gills Sans or Johnston takes over the role of Helvetica rather than being considered a niche font for London underground, LNER and pre double arrow British Rail(ways) ?

given that Johnston and Gill developed these typefaces in the 1920s
