WI: No FDR

Let's say for whatever reason FDR does not run in 1932. Who would be nominated in his stead and what would the '30s look like?

Long, Baker, George Dern, and Ritchie ... Is it just me, or do all these people seem to be dying around 1936?

It's as if a time traveler came back from a dystopian future where FDR didn't win and made sure things turned out differently.

Yeah. I'm getting that vibe as well.

All these politicians also seem to be either more conservative or dictatorial than FDR as well.

William H. Murray, for dystopic sh*ts and giggles?

William H. Murray would be far more likely than Al Smith. Mainly, I see Murray as railing against Smith's ties with Tammany Hall and even playing on Smith's Catholicism in the Deep South.

Funnily, I see Hoover doing a fair bit better against Murray than he did against Roosevelt because Murray's got quite a bit of a "yuck" factor to him, and Tammany Hall might campaign vigorously for Hoover.

I talked about this premise in an old thread. The fact that he managed to hide his polio and become president while disabled is already implausible enough, but then every depression alternative for president was awful and half of them died before they could challenge him.

If Murray was the nominee:

I used US Election Atlas so red is Democrat and blue Republican. So Murray wins a landslide, but with 392 EV to Hoover's 132, so a smaller landslide. Given the extent of the Democrat landslide in Congress Murray would probably face little opposition to his agenda there. If the Republiacns are lucky they could get 3 more Senate seats than IOTL.

So, with Murray's presidency, what exactly would he do and how far would he go? What would be the effects? How different would the 1930s be? Btw, somebody should make a TL out of this.

How grimdark do you want to get with basically President Daniel Plainview? :D

Based on his OTL attitudes, he would probably enact most of the early New Deal reforms and toy with authoritarianism far more than FDR ever did. Race relations will probably be worse than OTL, and he would almost certainly chime in with the Hitler chorus during the early stages of the Nazi takeover, noting the effects that "strong rule" can have on economic recovery.

If he feels the public's about to turn on him, he might even go so far as to engineer a fake Business Plot (read: Reichstag Fire) and put the country under martial law like his propensity to break out the State National Guard during his time as Governor.

But it all really depends on how much like "It Couldn't Happen Here" you want to make this unfortunate USA.

There is actually a timeline I've seen with Murray as the President. Granted, FDR was still running and actually lost the nominee due to Al Smith smearing Roosevelt. The timeline was called The End of Freedom: The Ultimate Cost of the Great Depression
