The Erie Canal had a huge impact on the development of the midwest, and Great Lakes region, NYC, and on US exports. How does the US progress if the canal isn't build for political reasons? Does Philadelphia stay the economic center of the US?

The pace is slower, but in the end not much different from OTL. Besides, just because one OTL canal isn't built doesn't mean that an AltTL one won't be built instead (or perhaps a system of interstate carriage-ways gets developed). REhiladelphia, it only remains the economic center of the nation if the 1st or 2nd Bank of the United States successfully continues in existence, and even if that happens, Philadelphia is going to be eclipsed by some other city, like New York or later Chicago, or perhaps some place else (Cleveland, or perhaps Detroit - if Ontario is persuaded to join the Union ).
