In 9 July 518 Emperor Anastasius I died in his sleep aged 88 without having appointed a successor...
The officials gathered to the Palace to elect an new Emperor... Several candidates were proposed and among them was:
1. Chamberlain Theocritus backed by the powerful Chief Chamberlain Amantius
2. John a captain of the Excubitores Guard backed by the majority of the Excubitores
3. Vitalianus Magister Militum Orientis backed by Scholae Palatinae
4. Justinian backed by a small faction of the Excubitores but he refused the nomination
5. Celer Magister Officiorum who was supported by the regular army
The people in the Hippodrome quickly rejected the candidacies of John and Vitalianus (the Blues stoned John, while Greens almost lynched Vitalianus) and the Senate was left with the candidacies of Theocritus and Celer.
Chief Chamberlain Amantius then gave large sums of gold to the Commander of the Excubitores Justin and ordered him to bribe the Senators in order to elect Theocritus, but the elderly General used the gold to convince the Senators to vote for him and thus was elected Emperor...
WI Justin followed Amantius's orders and bribed the Senators to vote for Theocritus?
With no Justin I as Emperor certainly there wouldnt be a Justinian to follow...
How is History altered with a different Emperor in 518?
