WI: No Dual Monarchy

What happens if the Austro-Hungarian Compromise isn't accepted and Austria-Hungary isn't formed?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Hungarian_Compromise_of_1867

Well that's a difficult question. The only way I can see the compromise being aborted would be if Austria beats Prussia in the Austro-Prussian war. That defeat is what gave the Hungarians the leverage to make their demands. But, assuming that the Hungarians don't get their way AND remain in union with Austria (it is possible that the Hungarians will try to break away again) then first off, they won't be able to hold the Empire hostage and prevent any meaningful reform. That in itself is a massive plus for Austria. Second, I can see the armed forces of the Empire being stronger, sense there is only one military budget, rather then two. Besides that, well I'll have to think about it.

I agree that a victorious Austria in 1866 would not be forced to compromis that much autonomy to Hungary; and that would probably be the best outcome, combined with applying the same rights to Bohemia.

With this template, a successful and stable partial federalization of the empire would be far easier than in OTL.

Even after Königgrätz, though, I doubt that an actual Hungarian uprising had many chances to succeed.

The time between 1859 and 1866 was one of constitutional experiments. What about a federal Hungary (Hungary-Croatia-Transylvania) within a federal Austria (Austria-Bohemia-Galicia-Hungary) in some kind of union with all or part of Germany (!)

That would be interesting. I can only see that as the outcome of a very different 1848. I doubt that union or confederation with Germany is in the cards later on. But perhaps an economic union and that would already be interesting and a huge opportunity.

In my TL-in-progress (see https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=301582), I have neither Austria nor Prussia really win the war of 1866. Prussia manages to unite Germany, but Austria gains Bavaria (without Franconia), and Prussia annexes the Czech lands. I'm not even sure if this all is possible (in other words, I haven't yet worked out the 'how' and 'why'), but I'm wondering; what effect would this have on the Austrian-Hungarian relationships within the empire? In my timeline-notes I wrote down there is no Compromise in 1867, but does that make sense? And what would the long-term consequences be?

I'm just asking questions and not really answering the OP question... so, sorry  But still it'd be great if you guys could share your thoughts :)

Frankly, it makes little sense. Why should Austria end up swallowing half of their Bavarian ally? Strategically, the exchange would also weaken Austria, with Vienna almost becoming a border town.

However, it would slightly simplify the ethnical puzzle by keeping the Germans equally strong (Bavarians vs Sudeten) but subtracting the Czechs (who might be a pain for the Prussians later on).

Because Bavaria didn't want to be swallowed up by Prussia, so this was the onlt option left.

That's right. Good point... Hmm... But what if a buffer of southern Sudetenland goes to Austria (the areas marked zu Oberdonau and zu Niederdonau on the below map).

Yup.
