WI - No de Gaulle in May 1958

It seems like Charles de Gaulle was the only figure with enough prestige and influence to re-unify France in the aftermath of the May 1958 putsch, especially since the putschists erroneously thought that he was with them as a believer in Algerie francaise. What would have happened if de Gaulle had died of a heart attack in 1955 and was unavailable, short of a resurrection, of assuming power and defusing the May crisis.

Would there have been a May crisis if de Gaulle wasn't alive? When I raised this question on another forum, a friend of mine wrote: "if De Gaulle is dead from 1956 is there a May 58 crisis? Yes the 4th republic is in serious internal trouble, fire-breathers like Lagaillarde and opportunists like Salan are still around but the likes of Soustelle, Massu and co were acting to bring De Gaulle back not for Salan to play Napoleon....
