WI: No civic oath

So I just got done listening to Mike Duncan's series of podcasts on the French revolution. It strikes me that the revolutionaries might have done better if they hadn't attacked the priesthood so completely, the parish priests were onside with the nationalization of the church until their autonomy was attacked. What would the butterflies be, my guess is a more moderate revolution over all.

More moderate? That´s not the butterflies but the prerequisite for it. French enlightenment philosophy was pretty anticlerical. What else exactly are you envisioning as the philosophical "Überbau" for your revolutionaries?
But the whole French Revolution is such a complex matter and other people are so much more versed in this domain, so I´ll just sit back, read and relax :)
