WI:No Charlemagne

How would Europe and the world be affected if Charlemagne was simply never born? I think this would mean Germany as know it is gone and probably some radical changes to Italy and France. PErhaps a bigger but weaker Frankish Kingdom? What if?

Population of several western German tribes would be larger during this period (Saxons, etc), and Paganism would last longer... two things i can think of off the top of my head.

Would Christianity have spread slower perhaps?

Perhaps to some degree in Saxony and north Germany in general. Maybe the Saxons convert about the same time as the Danes do, in the late 10C.

The political changes could be a lot bigger than the religious. There might not even be a "Germany" as we know it. Saxony might be a Scandinavian country, with central and south Germany remaining politically linked to "France". It is also possible that Acquitaine and Languedoc are never incorporated into a French kingdom whose centre of gravity is further north and east. Maybe Bordeaux and Toulouse belong to Spain. The Lombard kingdom may well survive in Italy.
