WI: No Britpop?

What if the Britpop movement of the 90's never got going? Imagine, no Oasis, Blur, Suede or Pulp in the charts *shudders*

What would take the place of this movement? Perhaps a second coming for Madchester? A stronger wave of Shoegazing?

What would happen to the key players? Many of the Britpop bands came from the Madchester/Baggy/Shoegazing movements.

Maybe an English wave of Grunge bands (Bush too obviously) will be dominant?

Not sure about grunge, since Britpop was partly a reaction to American grunge bands. Heavier bands like Little Angels, Thunder and Skin might have become more popular (hopeless optimisim on my part).

One would hope that we'd be spared the mediocre dreck of Coldplay and their ilk, of course.

Hmm. Music was pretty much US dominated in the 80's and very early 90's. Glam, Grunge etc.

I can only think of prolonging bands like The Smiths. And perhaps making JAMC stick to the styles explored on their first two albums. Creation Records could have made a very different landscape had they been more prepared.
