WI: No Black Plague

Pretty self-descriptive.

How would things have developed if for some reason the Black Plague never evolved, or never became as virulent as it did in OTL? What nations would survive longer? Would the Rennaissance begin in the 1300's? With more people, would Europe develope faster? Discuss.

More likely then not this would slow down development.

Massive famines as the farming technology was simply unable to keep up with the demands of the population. The famines however would still be unable to stem the tide of the growing population, leading to eventual disaster. The peasants would continue to be utterly dominated by their land lords and the nobility, there would be no humanism as there is no reason to question the Churches authority, and basically there probably wouldn't BE a renaissance. Not for several hundred years at least.

The "calamitous 13th century" goes right along schedule with the Great Cholera Plague of 1352.

The BD, in and of itself, didn't actually change much. By the ned of the century, granted, wages were higher, peasants had (slightly more) rights; but that wasn't so much because of the plague on its own as because of the combination of all of the terrible things that happened to Europe over the last 75 years.

No chance of increased Italian trade making Egypt the breadbasket of Europe again? Or hunger resulting in a stronger effort to capture it?
