WI: No Battle of Ksar El Kebir or Portugese Victory

Scenario 1- Abu Marwan Abd al-Malik I Saadi dies on the eve of the Battle of Ksar El Kebir or Scenario 2- his death during the battle becomes known throughout his army leading to victory for King Sebastian and his ally Abu Abdallah Mohammed II Saadi.

Question 1- If the new Sultan dies before the battle, does a battle even take place? I mean would the deposed Sultan be welcomed back? If so what was King Sebastian going to get out of helping him get his throne back.

Question 2- Does a battle taking place change anything about the spoils of war?

Either way, the Portuguese king is going to face some tough resistance if he expects to install the desposed sultan on the throne. It would look fishy for a Christian to be aiding a Muslim ruler unless there was some ulterior reasons.

I think that it depends on what the Portuguese do next. In the case that Ksar-el-Kebir is a victory, they could retreat to the coast and secure their possession of Larache. If they advance, it would cause serious troubles for the Portuguese, as one of the reasons of their defeat is that they were fighting in an arid region during summer. The further they advance the worse these problems grow, and they would probably have more problems with their supply lines with the fleet.

Anyway, the death of Abu Marwan before or during the battle wouldn't stop Ahmad from claiming the throne, and so Abu Abdallah would still face internal opposition.
