In 1933, Cuba was ruled by President Ramón Grau, part of the government known as the "Pentarchy of 1933" following the overthrow of President Gerardo Machado.
However, Fulgencio Batista was the power behind the throne, and was appointed Army Chief of Staff by the new President.
This led to a rebellion by army officers known as the "Battle of the Hotel Nacional", demanding that Batista's irregular promotion be revoked and the old Chief of Staff, Sanguily, be reinstated.
In OTL, the rebellion was put down, Batista remained as Chief of Staff, position from which he would overthrow the Grau government and become puppet-master to a series of weak Presidents before assuming the Presidency himself.
But what if the rebel officers had prevailed, and Batista was removed from office?
What would Cuba look like without Batista?
Would the Las Vegas mafia have settled in Cuba regardless? Would there have been a Cuban Revolution?
In the 1930s Cuba had a GDP per capita ahead of Spain, and a similar literacy rate.
What would the country look like today if it had developed along a different path?
