WI No A-bombs dropped on Japan

Admittedly that would be a concern, the Japanese who knew that it was far too late to run away from the Red Army's advance or were already encircled did take it out on the civilian population (there's actually a Chinese film about this, which includes scenes of Type-95's going up against T-34's) however the focus was also on getting away as quickly as possible if they still could (one of the major causes of death on the Japanese side was wounded soldiers being abandoned) combined with the complete collapse of their supply chain, and command being beheaded with the Soviet capture of the Kwantung High Command at Hsinking, the capacity for mass atrocities would be greatly reduced with Mao increasing his control of the countryside and the Red Army and the KMT rapidly liberating the cities and ports.

No matter how quickly the campaign went, there would still be more casualties than OTL. There's also the possibility of CCP/KMT issues breaking out in areas where they run into each other.

So you think the Bomb would have been used relatively close to the front lines rather than striking targets UN forces wouldn't get to for months?

Desirable option. By the way, in Hiroshima was the first Soviet officers, and during the war. Strange.

If the war had continued could Unit 731 decide to mass release its weapons and go for broke. They may say the hell with things and go out in a blaze of hellfire.

Undoubtedly, but I'd contest the 'Million a Month' projection, Japanese causalties are going to be very high.

The Soviets had already occupied the camp in Pingfang by the first few days of their invasion of Manchuria, the remaining staff were mainly concerned with finding places to hide.

THANK YOU!

Thank you, indeed.

While the conservative estimate regarding civilian deaths is 250,000 per month across all the regions - China, Malaysia, the DEI, Philippines, etc. - Japan still occupied, Madoc's points still stand.

In the end, we're faced with the Fat Villain variation on the (in)famous Trolley Problem in ethics. The original problem has a runaway trolley heading for 5 people whom it will kill. You can stop the trolley by pushing a fat man in it's path, leaving you with the choice between actively killing one to save five people or allowing five people to be killed through passive inaction.

In the Fat Villain variation, the fat man is the one who has placed the other five people on the track and caused the trolley to move. Now your choice is whether to kill the fat villain and save the five people or still eschew any active killing at all.

As with all ethical questions, there are no "correct" answers.

You still added something substantial--the possibility the Japanese would go berserk on the civilian population when it was clear they were losing.

Plus more deaths among the Soviets, the KMT, and the ChiComs (if they bother to participate) than OTL.

Even scarier - they would have released the viruses and bacteria from Unit 731 and cause a global pandemic, killing 50+ million in the process!

Has Unit 731 simply "opened all the vials" the worst that would have happened was relatively local disease, with the possibility of limited spread among Russian troops. They did not have any truly engineered super bugs (way beyond the technology of the day) and the disease they played with (such as plague) needed proper vectors to spread. So, while you may see a local "epidemic", you will most assuredly not see any sort widespread disease let alone a pandemic such as the 1918 flu.

Very scary situations and what ifs from the POD. I personally feel that both the bombs and the Soviets moving in helped to end the War. Just a shame it took so long for it to end and that the Allies took so long to even TRY to stop Japan in China.:(

They were a bit busy elsewhere. Not that some Japanese hadn't tried to instigate war, when they bombed the flag swathed ship of the American embassy fleeing the Rape of Nanking.

The USS Panay episode was a call to action but the US allowed to be bought off with fake apologies and little money. Too many Chinese died in those early days.

Okay, so The Red has contributed his thoughts on how a Soviet campaign south of Manchuria would go. I've suggested a British march down Malaya to fight the Japanese for Singapore.

What else?

Well, at the time the Australians had landed in Borneo and were making short work of the Japanese there.

Maybe Borneo gets cleared out, and a bunch of other DEI islands see Australian and US landings?

How about a general insurrection in Indochina?

That's still several months, with the war more intensified.

And the deployment of *le gasp* the Bat Bomb (no, really..).

'Anyone got any ideas for making war on Japan?' - Early war period.

Some(drunk guy at a bar or what)one: '.. well they have a cultural fear of bats. And their houses/towns are really flammable. So lets find some bats that survive transport for a few hours, breed them, cool them into hibernation, strap napalm bombs with timers on them weighing about an ounce each and then stack thousands upon thousands of them into a bomb. Then we'll fly it over their cities, release it with a parachute. It'll unfold, the bats will warm up, fly out & hide in the cellars/crawl space of Japanese buildings in the area. Everything will catch fire, the Japanese will totally freak out about these alien bats that are seemingly descending on them from space:p, how cool is that!'

Guy at munitions research department. 'Hey this sounds like an idea.'

And by late 1945 it's ready..
