WI: No 2nd Mexican Empire

So, what would the effects be if Napoleon III's French Empire had withdrawn from Veracruz with it's allies after getting its debts honored?

Conservatives in Mexico get no revival of power. Diaz doesn't rise up as prominently and possibly doesn't become dictator later. Juarez's Liberal program for Mexico means a weaker church and more assimilation for Indians.

And no mariachi music. It originally came from the French.

Also Latin America has another name. It was a phrase Napoleon III first used in his calls for Mexicans to accept his rule.

A useful bit of information, thanks! What might that alternate name be?

Juarez would have died too early anyway as he did in OTL. Instead of having Diaz as a dictator we would probably see Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada, who was Juarez's VP and became president after Juarez's death. Diaz took power after Tejada reelected himself. However his and Diaz's policies would have been almost identical. The major difference being the possibility of Tejada more American investment instead of European.

The anti-reelectionist revolution would happen earlier as Tejada would be in power for longer. And we might see a "democratic" Mexico by the turn of the century. But there is the possibility of many consecutive "liberal" dictatorships.

Instead of Latin America the name Ibero-America

could you explain why? was Maximilian the key in keeping peace within the German Confederation or something?

Because France had its best regiments in Mexico, it was a good bet they would not dare to come to Austria's aid when war broke out with Prussia

Bismarck may well not be able to make that bet, and things will move in unknown ways for the rest of the 1860s

its amazing how much Prussia profited off of Napoleons incompetence.

anyway, what would the effects on German politics be if Austria retained the Presidency of the Confederation?

wonder how Austrian politics would develop without that defeat, no Dual Monarchy presumably.

IIRC it took several years for France/Allies to collect their money
and Maximilian didn't arrive till 1864
In April 1864 Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian stepped down as Commander-in-Chief of the Austrian Navy. He traveled from Trieste aboard the SMS Novara, escorted by the frigates SMS Bellona (Austrian) and Themis (French), and the Imperial yacht Phantasie led the warship procession from his palace at Miramare out to sea.[4]

The new emperor of Mexico landed at Veracruz on 28 May 1864
Britain and Spain Pulled out under international pressure, after the Mexicans agreed to pay, France remained to be the Big Stick And make sure the agreement was kept.
So whe still have mariachi music.
The big difference is the civil war starts with the French withdraw in 1863.
