WI: No 1995 federal shutdown?

How do you avoid it? If Clinton gives into Republican demands to cut into Medicare and other social programs, he's going to doom his own re-election with regard to the Democratic base. This probably means a challenge from the left in 1996, and the Republicans look all the stronger.

Even if you avoid that, you still have the Congressional Republicans proposing to cut into Medicare, which Clinton isn't going to stand for unless he's backed into a huge corner. If he is, and ascents to those sort of cuts, he's likely not going to rebound in the public opinion polls against the Republicans. It would put him in a terribly weak position for 1996, likely paving the way for a Dole Presidency.

My dad wouldn't have had some extra "vacation" time that year when the Forest Service shut down. :p

It seems that if Clinton backed down he could lose re-election in 1996, or perhaps just not get quite such a large EV majority. But what would happen if the Republicans backed down before the shut down? Could they lose their majority? I'm not so sure about that either. Finally, if it somehow never happened at all, what would that result be?

I think the country would work a lot better if the Feds just stayed shut down-- except the post office, they have to work seven days a week now. And imagine what the budget would look like if they stayed shut down. And taxes.. bah! Those are for Europeans.
