WI: Nixon plane crash 68

In Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail 72 Hunter S Thompson mentions flying on Nixon's campaign plan early in 68 and getting in trouble for smoking a cigarette near the fuselage. Say he drops his cigarette and the plane catches fire? What happens

GOP: Reagan is nominated because most of the Nixonians go to Reagan. Either HHH or RFK for the Dems, depending how closely we're hewing to OTL here.

I'm pretty sure that this would have happened early in the year before RFK even entered the race so not sure what the butterfly effect of Nixon being dead would be.

It depends exactly when. Two PODs for the '68 process in late 1967: either Romney doesn't self-nuke with "brainwashing" (though he will suffer Giuliani's fate eventually IMO) or RFK enters at the behest of Lowenstein and the New Left. It was his turning them down which through a few twists and turns, led them to ask McCarthy to run. The former being likelier than the latter IMO.

Without Nixon's breakthrough entreaty to China, China remains a North Korea-like entity, only much more numerous, bigger, stronger, et cetera.

Someone is bound to get nuked.

I'd bet on the end of the world as we know it by 1985.

All the candidates except Reagan pledged to recognize the PRC.

I did not know that!

Well, to be fair none of them were discussing much other than 'Nam or the cities. Not even the economy got much mention.

Back OT: Regardless of whether you get an HHH-Reagan matchup or RFK-Reagan matchup, it will still be a very tight election.
