WI Nick Begich and Hale Boggs lived?

In 1972, a Cessna flying freshman Representative Nick Begich (D-Alaska) and House Majority Leader Hale Boggs (D-Louisiana) on a campaign trip in Alaska disappeared. After 39 days, the search was called off. Though Begich actually won re-election, his disappearance (and, presumably, death) led to Don Young taking control of the sole Alaskan House seat. Furthermore, with Boggs gone, Tip O'Neill became House Majority Leader.

What would've happened if the plane carrying Begich and Boggs arrived safely in Juneau?

Gravel will almost probably groom Begich to take on Stevens. Or perhaps instead of the brutal 1980 primary, Gravel steps aside for his protege Begich. An experienced Begich v. whatever Republican would be interesting.

What happens with Hale Boggs? Presumably, he becomes Speaker when Carl Alberts retires; does he get along better with fellow Southerner Jimmy Carter than Tip O'Neill did?

Boggs would move up to Speaker when Albert steps down due to his severe alcoholism and Tongsun Park in 1974. O'Neill clashed with Carter because Carter offended many of the Beltway Establishment's unwritten mores, not to mention Carter pushing a DLC domestic program that the "New Deal or No Deal" O'Neill intensely disliked. That was only a small preview of what would happen with Reagan in the 1980s.

Boggs becomes Speaker, and probably continues the tradition of Albert/Rayburn in terms of being an effective leader of the House. Begich probably becomes a continued force in Alaska politics, perhaps becoming senator.
