WI: Newt Gingrich doesn't leave congress in 1998?

What if, after resigning from the Speakership in November 1998, Newt Gingrich had decided to remain in the House of Representatives as an ordinary congressman instead of leaving altogether?

Wrong forum, dude.

Why the hell do you people do this? Are you like vultures, circling the forum waiting for someone to post a thread in the wrong place so you can claim that sweet, sweet, FIRSTPOSTINTHETHREAD, OH GOD LET'S MAKE IT A WORTHLESS ONE!

Next time, report, don't derail the thread in its infancy! I'm not just talking to you, this is for all the Backseat Mod Krewe.

He retires in 2000.
Yeah, I can't imagine him actually even staying. The hatred that would be directed at him once he's out of power would be nasty. And here's a quote about LBJ that suits Newt: "If he wasn't the leader of the team, he would take his ball and go home."

Agreed. IOTL Denny Hastert resigned rather than serve out his term under more favorable circumstances, no reason why Gingrich wouldn't do the same.

I agree with RB . Its all about power and face. Plus its a lot easier to make money has a lobbyists and a writer than has a back bencher.

Senate Majority Leader Gingrich???

Nah... he'd need to stay on a lot longer than that. The Senate works off of seniority.

Or kissing up and worming your way in the leadership. Which Gingrich will not be able to do after alienating everyone on both sides of the aisle.
