WI: New York Takes Reclamation to Max

New York is a great place, we should make more of it.
In the 20s, an engineer proposed an ambitious expansion of Gotham, the centerpiece of which was to be the filling in of the East River. In total, 50 square miles would've been added, assuming a population density of 20,000 per square mile, that's an extra million people.

You might think this is too much, but take a look at how much they added to Boston through reclamation

So how bout it?

Don't forget the other plan to fill in the Hudson.

Imagine a New York City with both the Hudson and the East Rivers filled and all of it now drains into Long Island Sound.

New Amsterdam indeed.

I wonder what effect connecting Manhattan with Queens and Brooklyn might have - a LOT of neighborhoods are going to impacted by this.

I can't see from the map, but would Ellis Island still be an island after this?

As much money as there has been pouring into New York recently, I'm kind of shocked there HASN'T been any efforts to reclaim land in NYC.

As a matter of fact, 20 new blocks are being built in the east river.

There was a more feasible reclamation proposal in the 60s. The Hackensack Meadowlands in New Jersey had become a giant garbage dump and it was suggested building a city of 300,000 on top of it.

Interesting, my old hometown of Atlantic Highlands would share a land border with New York City.

However, I feel like filling in the east river would have disastrous effects, namely causing the Hudson River to overflow and thus making flooding of Manhattan and Hudson County inevitable.

Wouldn't it just back up into the Long Island Sound?

They also wanted to reclaim Jamaica Bay

Given New York's current housing shortage, they probably should look into doing all this.

I think the impact would be most profound on Staten Island. Right now, only one bridge and ferries connect it to the other 4 boroughs, with the extension of Manhattan, it would be right on Staten Island's doorstep. That'd probably mean much higher density development and subway service.
