WI: Neo-Fascist Coup "Golpe Borghese" successful

On the 8th of December, 1970, Junio Valerio Borghese's Neo-Fascist Party "Fronte Nazionale" aided by sympathisers in the police, the army, the Italian government and the American embassies military attaché and possibly even some figures in the DC and PSDI, launches Operation Tora Tora. The aim of the plot was to kipnap President Giuseppe Saragat, eliminate the head of the police Angelo Vicari, and the occupation of the Quirinale, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Defense and Italian public television broadcaster RAI. A crackdown on the Communist stronghold Sesto San Giovanni and the involvement of NATO troops, as well as the Mafia, were also planned.

In real life, the coup was called off by Borghese because the Christian Democrats were alerted to the coup and prepared to put it down with force, and the Mafia had failed to provide support. The planners were arrested a few days later, the leftist journal Paese Sera made the news public with the famous headline 'Subversive plan against the Republic' and eventually the coup resulted in a reorganisation of the Italian Secret Service. Freedom of Information has proved that the Americans were involved with the coup organisers, but only a minority of the CIA were actually in favour of a coup.

In this TL, let's assume the Mafia were tempted by the pardons Borghese offered them, and somehow the government remains unaware of the plan. America takes no action against the coup. By the 11th, the elderly Black Prince is now leader of Italy.

What happens?

How did the Christian Democrats fit in with this? How did they find out?

Presumably they were tipped off by one of the plotters or someone related, it could even have been the Americans. I don't know. It's all very.... secretive, and there's virtually no in-depth English language accounts of the coup.

I do know that the coup was called off (though Borghese claimed it was just a protest against Tito's state visit to Italy) because the CD government was about to declare martial law.

It was supposed that in effect the plot was an attempt to convince the DC to enact the martial act and to put outlaw the PCI, or that the plan was discovered in time.

However, about the question of involvement of members of DC in the plot, it was utile remember that part of them accepted to join into the secret NATO paramilitary organization with "Stay Behind" purposes, that here assumed the the name of "Gladio", which its objective was to prevent a comunist coup in Italy by any means, and for that motive probably supported the Borghese coup.

Probably, the coup failed because the high politicians of the DC refused to support the coup and to be ready to stop it.

The whole plot's purpose was to cause enough unrest and panic to justify martial law and right wing goverment. The forces under Borghese were too weak for a real coup d'etat.
I've read, but completely objective studies on the matter are hard to come by, that the coup was called off because CIA called back her support. Probably because the situation was already too unstable to guarantee the desired outcome.

Please note that the whole "the coup as a pretext to raise panic and diminish personal freedom" is perfectly coherent with the following terrorist period (anni di piombo) and the secret "strategy of fear" (strategia della tensione) which moved the several terrorist groups...
