WI: Nazi U-boats After End of War in Europe

What if the plan to have U-boats left in the Atlantic to carry out a guerrilla war at sea continues after the German surrender in May 1945?

Dont be silly.

They are Nazis - it isnt about the availability of supplies, it is about the triumph of the will.

"Vat happened to Hans?"

"Ve ate Hans."

"Vat about Herman?"

"We tied him to a fishing line for the sharks that are pulling the submarine."

"Sharks!?"

"Ve ran out of petrol in 1946."

At least one boat was on the way to Japan as the surrender happened. Could this be an option? In April 1945 a group of long-range boats is send to Japan, with the explicit order to keep fighting under Japans command.

They have no sources of fuel, food, or torpedoes.

Also, by 1945, the U-boats had become ineffectual. In 1944-1945, U-Boats sank only 302 Allied ships, while at least 220 U-boats were lost at sea. So a U-Boat crew could expect to sink maybe one Allied ship before being sunk themselves, and probably dying.

And the real odds would be worse than that. With the war in Europe over, all the long-range bombers that had been attacking Germany would be transferred to ASW.

Expect to see a lot of u boats landing in south america after that :v

In some alternate universe there is a U-boat run aground over a crushed farmhouse and an irate llama farmer is yelling at a blond haired man that, for the last time, we're not as into you as the Yankees think we are.

WW II era subs had a maximum endurance of around 40 days. After that you ran out of food, fuel, and potable water runs out quickly once the engines die. Torpedoes are not replaceable in this scenario, and deck gun ammunition was relatively limited.

Even if you had every boat manned by the most fanatical of Waffen SS and Hitler Youth the boats are out of the game by July (this assumes they are sent out to sea even as the surrender is being signed).
