WI: Nazi Germany is nuked?

Deleted member 96212

Supposing that the Nazis manage to delay the inevitable long enough for the Americans to nuke them, what would the effects of this action be? What would the list of potential targets look like, assuming Allied armies haven't entered Germany yet? Would Japan surrender preemptively in the face of nuclear destruction or press on?

If you have a Kursk in reverse and D-Day is delayed to 1945 with WAllied troops on the beaches by the Summer and Soviet troops in Poland then yes German cities go up over and over and Germany surrenders after Hitler is removed by the army.

If it's late 45 and WAllied troops are pouring into Germany and Soviet troops are pouring in dropping the bomb on Berlin would be fairly stupid as there is a chance not a major one, but a chance the gas comes out and the ground battle bogs down.

This probably works better as a 'The US gets a bomb 6 months early' than 'the war drags on for 6 more months'.

I doubt the Nazis would surrender after a bomb or two, so the Allies might need to drop several. This could easily prevent the development of the idea of Abombs as war-winning weapons by themselves, and lead to their use in later wars. This could actually end up being a very messy and unpleasant world....

If Japan has the example of the Nazis fighting on through a handful of bombs, they're likely more ready to fight on as well.

IMO.

After the numerous firebombings and worse that Nazi Germany suffered, they might just keep going even after everything of value is gone.

Hitler had this hold over Germany to the point children were attacking veteran soldiers and many believed the end had come with mass suicides sweeping the Reich. He further reinforced German fears with the Allies declaration of unconditional surrender. It seriously was an "us against the world" scenario. Then there was the tying of their lives to him via the blood bond of the Holocaust. Germany was alone. Like any cult, the Nazis weren't going down rationally.

The only way I see a nuke ending the war is by taking Hitler out. As long as he is alive, the chances of a German surrender are low.

Very true. There was no way out for Hitler and therefore no motivation to surrender under any circumstances.

Unlike the Japanese royal family who could save their monarchy and avoid being prosecuted for war crimes by surrendering.

Maybe Hitler relocates large numbers of Jews to population centers- to get the allies to do his dirty work for him.
