What if one of the Mesoamerican civilized tribes emigrated to the carribean for some reason and created a couple small urbanized city states on the islands that we know today as Cuba and Dominica. How does Columbuses opinion of the natives change if instead of first contact bieng with primitive hunter gatherers it was a with a fully civilized group. How would this shape europes opinion on the natives? Would the Spanish even be able to take Dominica? If its not filled with primitive hunter gathers with a mentality that borders on pacifism would they even try?

The would certainly try, the tropical climate and large number of exploitable slave labor would make growing tropical cash crops highly profitable.

If the Carribean states resemble Mayan states the Spanairds would have a very hard time conquering them one at a time. But certainly a few choice locations can be colonized fairly quickly, especially after depopulation from disease.

The Taino were in no way, shape, or form primitive, nor were they hunter gatherers since they had a population of at least a million between the two islands and were settled farmers and were among the best sailors of the New World. For that matter, same goes for Caribs of Dominica, a separate island from Santo Domingo.

Odds are the Spanish would win sooner or later, unless the first contact was a massacre. The Taino had precious metals, so they already have a target on their back. Eventually Spain will return, eventually disease will break out, and that will destroy their numbers, assuming mass slavery doesn't do it first. Although the Spanish could have been less brutal toward the Caribbean Indians, who received some of the worst treatment of any indigenous group.

I meant Santa Dominica.

And yes i know the taino wernt truly primitive. Just like the Polynesian. Theres other types of advancement and civilization. And that the entire concept of civilisation is a contruct yada yada yada. But in this scenario as far as their ability to effectively fight back goes they might as well be primitive hunter gatherers. Wheras the more advanced mesoamericans actually win several battles against the europeans and were much more capable of fighting back.
