What if a group of mesoamerican natives fleeing a brutal war with another mesoamerican state flee into the Caribbean sometime in the mid 1300s and set up several small to medium sized city states on the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola. Say a dozen on Cuba and a Half dozen on Hispainiola. They range in size from a couple thousand people to the largest having over fifty thousand and they maintain a similar tech level to other meaoamerican states. By the time columbus arrives in 1492 theyve largely conquered and integrated the Taino though some small bands of Taino still roam free in the mountain areas of Cuba and the inland jungles of Hispainiola. How are relations with spain and the rest of europe effected if instead of first contact bieng with largely pacifist and relatively primitive taino its intead with a fully civilized sonewhat militarized state that is significantly more capable of fighting back? Is spain a little more respectful of the natives if they dont see them as primitive savages?
