WI: Narciso López‘s filibuster of Cuba successful?

There would probably be a severe political crisis in the US as many northerners would see this as a southern plot to expand slavery.

Also, since President Taylor was actively working against it, I imagine that anyone that got involved (like Davis or Lee in this TL) would face repercussions. The effect this would have on the Civil War would be enormous. I'm surprised I'm not able to find more on this topic...

It might be a part of a larger Compromise of 1850 though. Southern states would probably rather have Cuba than try to fight for Some of the other territories to have slavery

It's possible - now that the door is open in the Carribean and it seems as if Spain is now little more than a babysitter for future Southern territories - that the Missouri Compromise remains in place with the exception of California (which could be added as 2 free states instead of 1). Abolitionists and even slavery moderates (Lincoln types) will howl, but it will keep the peace.

Or maybe everyone howls and then the Spanish fleet shows up and blows them up with gunfire while everyone else decries such blatant, illegal land-grabbing from a friendly nation
