There's a story that, on the morning of the Battle of Waterloo, a British artillery officer asked the Duke of Wellington for permission to take a shot at Napoleon, who whilst inspecting the battlefield had come into range of the Allied cannon. Wellington famously refused, saying that army commanders had better things to do than taking pot-shots at each other. Say that Wellington had given the officer permission to fire, and that the resulting salvo managed to score a direct hit on the Emperor, killing him instantly.
