I don't want to be offensive in asking this question but would Islam still exist if something had killed him like hunger before he was 10?

What kind of impact would that have in the middle east and on the other large religions if this had happened?

Something like this could make Muhammad into a more compassionate figure instead of a conqueror. Lets say this: Medina experiences a famine while Muhammad is in his 20s, Muhammad has an experience with Gabriel and preaches in the city. Eventually he is kicked out and dies in the hands of one of the followers. The nature of Islam would change completely, instead of a conquest, Islam would become (even more than it is) a faith that tries to address the horrors of poverty and the horrors mankind inflicts on their kind.

A religion that spreads a strong message like that would surely get many followers, becoming ironically the return to Christianity's original message; before its turn to an Imperial religion.
