I'm confused. Wasn't he independent in all but name? Why would he do this?
What year would be the best time for him to revoltMuhammed Ali could have revolted but knowing what Mahmud II did earlier (fight more against Ali pasha of Yanya than Greek rebels). If he was stupid he would fight the Ottomans before they are exhausted by the Greek war.

To gain more territory. After all, he did go to war to get control of Syria a few years after the Greek Revolt
Independence would do absolutely nothing to help him take Syria.
I was thinking more about the term to "revolt" than de jure independence".
War against the Ottoman Empire is to revolt. If the great powers had not intervened Muhammad Ali could have ended up taking large parts of Asia Minor.
In other words, the question of de jure independence really becomes irrelevant, as Egypt would be far more powerful than the Ottomans.
Why would american boxer revolt against ottomans?
Mama call him Clay, I call him Clay.
