WI: More Romulans in Star Trek

What if producers of Star Trek decided to strenghten Romulan plot in the series and make them appear more often, depicting Romulan Star Empire regime and systems of government? Will it make Star Trek more popular than OTL? Could Romulans be one of major races in ST movies (in OTL we have dominance of Klingons there)?

It was original Plan for first Star Trek series
that they become a menace for Federation, from Season one episode 14 "Balance of Terror" on.
But the cost prevent that, the pointy Ears make up were very expensive, for Single Character like Spock, in was still in budget.
and entire crew of Romulans were only possible for one or two episode per season, not more.

So the Klingons were introduce, with cheaper make up (like missing ridged foreheads)
So i wunder why had they not adapted the Romulans to more human like face and hide there ears under wild hair ?

I've no idea but if they could have afforded to keep the Romulans instead of inventing the Klingons I would have loved to see more appearances by John Colicos as Commander Kor in the TOS.

the Romulans are scarier because they're more cold-blooded.

Plus, there was this spooky relationship with the Vulcans and the split. I think Romulans and Vulcans were basically cousins. And I guess this showed that logic could be destructive, unethical or at least disregarding of others, accepting war as foregone conclusion, accepting death as foregone conclusion, saying what difference does it make -- well, it sure as hell matters in the meantime! -- or things which sometimes repel us, sometimes attract us, and thus get an emotional reaction and make us feel uncomfortable.

I remember Kirk almost being seduced by a female Romulan leader even though he was playing a role in a complex plan. And I don't mean simply sexually.

Who were the Romulans? The Klingons were the Soviet Union analogue so who did the Rommies represent?

Red China. Recall that the US hasn't directly had combat with the USSR, but had fought Chinese troops in Korea a decade before. So in TOS, you had unease between Star Fleet and the Klingon Empire, but had an actual War with the Romulans, who were mysterious and inscrutable, behind a Neutral Zone.

In my opinion Romulans weren't cousins with Vulcans - they were Vulcans who emigrated from their home planet after war with Surak followers and settled on Romulus. During they journey they mixed with other races and thus we have Romulans looking slighty different from Vulcans.

And I think that there are two senses of honour - Klingonese and Romulan. Klingons place personal honor above their duty to the country while Romulans place duty above their personal honor. We have Romulan senator who is opposing for Shinzon plan to destroy Federation and is telling him that their next generations will live in a shame if humans would be destroyed. Look at Romulan commander from TOS - honorable enemy for James T. Kirk who regrett his death.

I think that greater presence of Romulans would improve Star Trek - instead of savage warriors we could have wise, hardworking people. Maybe Worf role in TNG could be changed into some Romulan officer?

Yes, Tal Shiar officer onboard USS Enterprise-D would do very much good things for Romulan Star Empire :)
