WI: More A4's instead of Pucara's for Argentina in '82 Falklands War?

WILDGEESE

Gone Fishin'
Around 60 Pucara's where delivered to the Argentine Air Force in 1982 and had limited effect.

What if more money was available to the FAA (Argentine economy was better performing) and instead of developing the Pucara more A4 Skyhawk's (60) where bought?

How wold it effect the outcome of the conflict?

Would more RN ships be lost?

Regards filers

Well the Pucaras at least could be based in the Falklands thanks to their rough field SVTOL capabilities. A4's couldn't unfortunately. Really good use of the money would have been developing like a engineering battalion and improving/lengthening the airfields so fighters could be based on the islands.

There was also a pretty crazy plan to modify Pucaras to carry WW2 aerial torpedo's for usage against British surface ships.

Pucara is a Argentinian built aircraft

It is built for COIN warfare - you know taking on Shotgun armed farmers and the like - so it was very useful in that role

Also it is easier and cheaper to maintain than a fast jet and can operate from dirt strips while A4 is unable to operate from the Falklands

So only in the Falklands war would more A4s instead have made sense while for the rest of its service the Pucara made sense
