I know that this seems implausible, but let's say something happens so that people no longer take the Moral Majority seriously in the 1980s. What kind of consequences do you picture occurring?
Agree with Geography Dude. HW was considered a Rockefeller Republican, not a social conservative. He won the 1988 election based on being the closest available thing to an incumbent at a time of relative peace and prosperity. He also had an opponent with negative charisma.
HW lost four years later due to a bad economy. Dole took the nomination against Buchanan in 1996. W ran as a "compassionate conservative". McCain was best known as a maverick. Romney was a flip-flopper on hot button social issues. Trump lets transgender people use whatever bathroom they want at Trump Tower. The Santorums and Bauers and Cruzes of the world can't even win the GOP nomination.
I'd say the Moral Majority losing its clout in the 1980s is a DBWI.
They lose more clout if there are more scandals with the leadership. Sex and monetary scandals damaged the political traction of the religious political movement, Add more of that & the assorted groups lose membership, money, and votes for 'their' candidates.
