Actually, there are several known and unconfirmed reasons why they chose Ottawa as the new Capital.

In any case, if they kept Montreal as the Capital we probably would see a nationally enforced bilingualism to appease the French population and Quebec would be even more important than it is now.

'Remained' Montreal? That sounds like Montreal was the capital for any extended period, which I don't believe is true.

Kingston was one of the contenders for the capital of the united Canadas before Confederation, but after a brief stint as the capital from 1841 to 1844, it lost out to an alternating location of Montreal and Toronto, and then later to Ottawa in 1857, where it has resided since. Kingston was, however, the home of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald and on June 13 1841 was the site of the first meeting of the Parliament of Canada.

I'm not sure what the history is, but "an alternating location of Montreal and Toronto" doesn't sound like Montreal was 'the' capital, but rather 'a' capital. I am prepared to believe that the capital in early '57 was Montreal, but there was a deliberate decision to choose the capital, and while it might have been Montreal still, it would have been less 'remained' than 'placed there again'. as it were.
