WI: Mongol invasion of Japan by Temur Khan

IOTL after the two invasion attempts by the Mongol Empire against Japan, the Kamakura Shogunate fell into disarray, as the samurai class realised the central government was not to give them rewards for the display of loyalty. What if an invasion was conducted in the early 1300s or 1310s to exploit such a situation? Could the Mongol Empire become more successful?

The success of Mongols should be sought in their ability to retain land, rather than conquer it. Even if they took Japan they would lose it soon after.

They could be succesful if they manage to assimilate themselves into Japanese culture and then split Japan amongs themselves into various tiny states later to be united by one of them

But then they would have failed in another way as well, would they?

What the Mongols should have really done was to fully assimilate to Chinese culture instead,it will make their rule overall far more stabler across the entirety of East Asia given the immense prestige Chinese culture possesses at the time.Even the Japanese, for the most part, were trying to emulate the Chinese and saw them as a model of inspiration.

Well, there is the problem that if they assimilate too much, they'd lose the loyalty of the Mongols themselves. OTL, the Yuan was already seen as too Sinicised by their fellow Mongols in the west, though they too did assimilate to the local environment to a certain degree as well.
