What if Draža Mihailović died during the Axis Invasion of Yugoslavia? How would this effect the Chetniks or other resistance movements in Axis-occupied Yugoslavia during the Second World War?
What about Prince Paul leading the Chetniks? He seems more like a Yugoslav-oriented figure that groups other than the Serbs can rally around but I'm not sure about King Peter II.The monarchy itself would survive. Chetniks were loyal iotl, but here the monarch himself might take charge of the resistance directly. King peter himself would probably led troops into battle. The Yugoslavian monarchy would be viewed as is the Dutch, or Norwegian.
Who's the most likely to take control of the Chetniks after Mihailovic? There were plenty of other people who could have taken Mihailovic's place, the real question is which one of them comes to power as the head of the movement. I highly doubt that the movement is significantly altered though given the extremely decentralized nature of the Chetniks.
That's true but does that mean that Prince Paul doesn't take control of any resistance movement? How Yugoslav-oriented was King Peter II?Provided Paul can atone for taking sides with the Reich in the first place.
If King Peter II or Prince Paul took control of the Chetniks instead of fleeing into exile, would they be able to prevent the atrocities or collaboration that the Chetniks did IOTL?The monarchy itself would survive. Are there any other figures in the Yugoslav government who could become Chetnik leaders? If Mihailović died during the April War, his role would be taken over by a different officer. Peter II was relatively Yugoslav-oriented...but he was a teenager. Prince Paul, at least, was an adult; and one could hypothetically see him leading the resistance in a no Pact scenario. Or a scenario where the Axis attack on Yugoslavia comes earlier. But neither was a military person, so I can't really see either of them leading the resistance. And as King and Prince-Regent (respectively), they were too important. They'd get evacuated to London ASAP.
I think so.If King Peter II or Prince Paul took control of the Chetniks instead of fleeing into exile, would they be able to prevent the atrocities or collaboration that the Chetniks did IOTL?
Would they more be willing to work alongside the Partisans or not?I think so.
How effective would it be?I think they would form a coalition
I think they would form a coalition
This I wasn't too sure about - wouldn't there be the same level of animosity between the Chetniks and Partisans like IOTL?Why?
