What if extending copyright law even farther into perpetuity, Disney loses copyright control over Mickey Mouse in his earliest form from the 1920's by 1984?

They lose the 1928 version of Mickey. That version is very different from the one in 1984. While people can use the 1928 Mickey, they can only use the traits of that Mickey and nothing added afterwards.

It could have implications for those early Mickey comic strips, for which Disney sued to prevent their republication.

I thought it was not so much that Mickey Mouse was going into public domain, but that Steamboat Willie was, and the Walt Disney Company was using Mickey Mouse as an excuse to extend the copyright.
Mickey Mouse is still protected by trademark law and maybe the Disney Company will fight any unauthorized use of the Mouse, (hint, they will).
