WI: Mexico accepts the terms of the Zimmermann Telegram in WWI.

And also, if somehow Germany convinces Japan to join her as an ally. I dunno if this lingers a bit into ASB territory but it seems reasonable enough to be posted here. I just wanna have a general idea so I can later work on a good timeline about this scenario.

Thanks much.

Well the United States probably annexes another chuck of Northern Mexico and breaks away parts of it to form puppet republics.

Mexico would loose any war with the United States.

Yeah, Mexico might've had a chance back during the first Mexican - American war, if they weren't busy ripping themselves apart around that time.

By the 1900s, any Mexican assault on the USA = national suicide. It's like Ireland launching an invasion of the UK - theoretically conceivable, but so wildly self destructive as to be de facto ASB.

And much like the first M-A war that seems to indicate a better and more prosperous Mexico today. Individual Mexican states might have had the cohesion and stability to actually make something of themselves over time. Of course that's excluding the possibility of one or more states trying to take over the other which very well could happen in the event Mexico is split up into segments. Not sure anything could have convinced Mexico of such a venture except seeing German troops marching down Penn. avenue.

Agreed, it is hard to think a scenario where accepting the Zimmermann telegram isn't complete and utter suicide for Mexico. I wonder how Zimmermann thought that Mexico was willing to commit suicide for Germany.

Mexico gets dismembered. American college students in 2008 don't need passorts to go on Spring Break to Cabo & the U.S. has more oil fields. Meanwhile, the other 80% of the AEF still goes to Europe and swings the balance arm against the Central Powers as IOTL.

As far as the Japanese going at the U.S. in WW I, you would need to pry them away from their alliance with Great Britain. That would be a difficult task, especially given the gains they knew were coming their way if Germany lost the war.

Well, wasn't Mexico in the middle of a Civil War at the time, and Pancho Via did raid parts of Arizona. This might not be so much ASB as some kind of terrible interpretation of the situation on the ground--if the USA interprets the Zimmerman Telegram as Fact and also interprets Mexican intentions as aggrandizing, the USA could well decide to move South.

Wilson is enough of a bully to go for it--he'd just need an incident and some kind of indecisive reply from Mexico itself and bam, there will be a new state of Old Mexico joining the Union.

while it would be fun to have a Mexican invasion during WW1, i don't see it. Its like communism; its good on paper, not so much in practice. Germany did offer financial support, but the problem there is, where do they buy weapons from? The Royal Navy controlled the Atlantic, that just leaves the US to buy guns from... Its a Kamikaze attack for Mexico basically.

Mexico would have a hard time pulling of any offensive, they weren't exactly united at the time. US would probably invade and find a weird situation where the Mexicans both fight each other and the Yanks. And the Japan thing is ASB, Japan was a part of the Entente. The thing the Germans hoped from the Mexicans was help in securing peace between Germany and Japan, since Mexico had good relations with the Japs, however I doubt it would have worked, since the Japs would have demanded the German Pacific Empire, and the Germans weren't ready to concede anything.
