WI: Mehmet II converts to Christianity?

What are the short and long term implications for the Ottoman Empire if Mehmet II (and subseqently his house/issue) convert to Christianity immediately after capturing Constantinople in 1453?

As for the POD, lets say he has a spiritual awakening while visiting the Hagia Sophia or something.

I have a feeling that Mehmet's reign would be cut significantly short. The Ottoman Turkish rulers based much of their legitimacy off of being Muslim, the army was comprised almost entirely of Muslims and the noble class were also Muslims. If Mehmet can find a second base of support, he might be able to survive, but I'm expecting Mehmet to be cursing the army and noble's "sudden, but inevitable betrayal" within a few months.

Above is a link to a different board discussing this topic.

There were rumors that Mehmed II was willing to convert if he were recognized by the pope. Unfortunately, there is no hard evidence to prove whether this is true or not. Epistola ad Mahomatem, written by Pius II in 1461, was supposedly a letter to Mehmed that brought up this offer but many historians agree that it was a piece of propaganda.

In short, a decision to convert to Christianity would be Mehmed signing his own death sentence.

Maybe a much earlier Sultan during the infancy of the Osmanli state could have strong-armed his way through it with Byzantine support, but Mehmet II? He'd have to have been struck mad to even contemplate doing so; he was by just about any contemporary Christian or Muslim a symbol of Islamic strength and the resuscitation of Muslim power in the Mediterranean.

He will not rule for much longer. The only known Ottomans who converted to Christianity and have not gotten their heads chopped off were the descendants of the usurper Cem who had no chance in hell of ever taking power.
