So McClellan was a much better General-in-Chief than he was an army commander; his campaign plan for 1862 wasn't half bad, but Lincoln relieved him as General in Chief so he could command the Army of the Potomac on the Peninsular campaign, where his progress was underwhelming. Without anyone filling in as General-in-Chief, the multi-theater strategic offensive he planned fell apart
