The MBT-70 was a tank jointly designed by the US and West Germany during the 1960s. It featured a 152mm gun capable of firing normal ammunition in addition to the Shillelagh GLATGM.
Though about two dozen prototypes were produced, the project was plagued by cost overruns and disputes over how various components of the tank should be designed. In the end, the program was scrapped and the two countries opted for seperate tank designs: the Leo 2 and the Abrams.
What if the MBT-70/KPz-70 managed to enter service? Would it have been an effective weapon system or an over-engineered mishmash of various ahead-of-the-times technologies?
How would it have performed in the Gulf War and in a hypothetical WW3?
What kinds of upgrades could it expect to see as time went on?
Would it still see service today or would it have been replaced by an altogether different weapon system in lieu of its age?
How would it have influenced the tank designs of other countries? How different are the Challenger*, Leclerc*, and other tank designs going into the 1970s and '80s?
