In 28 October 312 Constantine arrived outside Rome after overunning northern Italy and beating Maxentius's armies in Turin and Verona.
Maxentius himself was fortified behind Rome's massive walls waiting while Constantine camped near Porta Prima. He believed that Maxentius would remain in Rome enduring a siege by his forces (Maxentius used the same strategy in his wars with Severus and Galerius), but to his surprise Maxentius chose to confront him in open field and a fierce battle took place in Saxa Rubra near the Milvian Bridge in which Constantine emerged victorious and killed Maxentius and thus remained sole Emperor in the West.
WI Maxentius chose to remain behind Rome's massive walls enforcing Constantine to a lengthy siege and slowly wearing him out? Or perhaps waiting reinforcements from Eastern Emperor?
What do u think?
