WI : Matthias Corvin has a son.

What if Matthias Corvin had had a legitimate son to succeed him on the throne of Hungary?

He tried to make his illegitimate son, János Corvinus his successor. However, he was too young and inexperienced to rule a state yet. Also he would be even more isolated politically than Matthias: he himself was looked down upon by other rulers because he was not from a royal dynasty, just the son of a nobleman. Now imagine being the illegitimate son of that man.

Like said, Hungary was an elective monarchy, so he could be a king only by the nobelity's will and they had no reason to make him a king. If he bacame a king, he would porbably be a puppet of the aristocracy, as he lacked the charisma and experience of his father. So I guess that would be kinda like OTL with Vladislavus. :)

If you want him to be a successor monarch, have Matthias living longer so his empire can stabilize a bit more anf János can pick up more experience.

You mean the Jagiellons, don't you? The Habsburgs only became kings of Hungary 36 years after Corvinus' death.
Obviously I shouldn't write stuff while in a lecture (even during break) - my brain is out. Corvinus was the one who united the same lands as the Habsburgs united, right? That would be quite the butterfly if the "Corvini" retained the area (although I still kind of doubt: nominally both Bohemia and Hungary were elective).

True, and the Jagellonians were legally elected to the throne, unlike the Habsburg, who's coronation was in fact, somewhat against the law, as it happened only by succession. By that time, succession did not really matter in Hungary, as long as you get elected by the diet (similarly to Poland at the time).

Actually Ferdinand was elected three times: by the Bohemians (in October 1526), the Hungarians (by a rump Parliament in December 1526) and the Croatians (January 1527). The difference here is that many nobles, especially in Transylvania, didn't accept his succession, and supported John Zapolya instead.

Didn't he have sons?
I recall something, that one of them was the anncestor of the vampires and the other the anncestor of the werewolfs. ;)

Other option would be to have his son with Catherine of Podebrady surviving to adulthood. He was born in 1464, so at the time of Matthias' death he would be 26, and would have a good time to learn how to deal with the nobles in order to secure his succession.

Well, he had a illegitimate son Janos Corvin ( or for us in Croatia- Ivaniš Korvin- he became later herzeg of Croatia and Slavonia ).
And he would surely suceeded him if only he was 5- 10 years older. He had IIRC about 14 years whan his father died.

In fact, that's more like the scenario I was thinking of. Matthias didn't father any child OTL, but his first wife died in childbirth and the baby was a stillborn.

I knew about Janos, and it would probably be interesting to see a timeline where Matthias successfully has his illegitimate son succeed him rather than the Jagellions.

But what if the child that was born from his first wife wasn't a stillborn? Could Matthias be able to have his son succeed him?
