WI: Matilda of Flanders marries Harold Godwinson

I read that Harold Godwinson was basically single but cohabitating with another woman at the same time when Matilda of Flanders was single, is a marriage between Matilda and Harold possible, before Matilda met William she was in love with an Anglo-Saxon man, what if that man instead introduces her to Edward the Confessor Harold Godwinson and she marries Harold instead of William what could have happened.

IIRC Harold was married to Edith Swan neck in 'the Danish' manner. i.e. a recognised concubine but not in a church marriage. Outside the ruling classes church marriages were rare up to the 18th century in England.

So, yes he was free to marry.

Maybe William would have had to do without his Flemish allies. Just possibly Harold could have had Flemings come across when William was threatening to invade but I doubt it.

Not marrying Matilda would leave William in better standing with the Church. Not sure how that affects his rule or French politics.

Who he marries in her place might also affect his politics and how many heirs (if any) he has available.
