WI: Massacre on The ISS?

Background checks do nothing if somebody has no criminal record. Their are loads of murderers, rapists and pedophiles that could pass a background check with flying colors since they haven't been arrested yet.

As for psychiatric checks someone could just lie. It isn't that hard to do a bit of research on what the doctor wants to hear. A psychologist can't read minds after all. They are not nearly as infallible as people like to think. Someone can be perfectly sane and still be a terrible person.

Exactly. Just to cite one example from up North, the colonel who was the Canadian equivalent of the command pilot of Air Force One turned out to be a serial killer. Nobody's screening process is infallible.

Well, it depends on sort of his psychopathy. I expect ISS astronaut to be more inclined to survive independently (due to nature of his job) rather than relying on legal loopholes for survival.

Some astronauts have a military background, but not all of them. I don't imagine most of them choosing to live in the jungle, holding knives in their mouths, when they could be having a comfortable life near a beach somewhere - if they play their legal cards right.

I do know that the contingency for an Astronaut on the ISS going berserk involves restraining them with duct tape.

Preach/Retweet man.

Down with abusive mods:p (just kidding don't ban me please)

I rarely defend "The Man" but I've never known Calbear to be unfair in any way and I've always found him to be both wise and just.

And personally through numerous interactions I've found him to be patient, wise, kind, and in all ways imaginable a good and even patient/tolerant man worthy of well justified respect. Even when he kicked me it was entirely justified and if I had had some more time I probably would have reported myself.

Point is there are some mods I'd say its appropriate to have a problem with. Calbear is definitely not one of them. As I've mentioned before I've always found him wise and just as a mod and as a member the producer of some of the best most well researched comments and content on the entire board.

What if the murderer tried to make it look like something malfunctioned on the space station? First cut communications, then kill everyone, then set the space station on a course to crash into the atmosphere and then escape on the Soyuz capsule and when he lands on earth make up a story that something went terribly wrong with the space station and he was the only one to escape alive.

If the space station wasn't able to transmit any data after he cut communications and then burnt up on re-entry his word would be the only evidence left of what happened.

In the event this was somehow successful (I have no idea how plausible, I'm going with unlikely) then nothing would happen to him, he'd just look like the sole survivor of a tragic incident.

First, it is difficult to guarantee what the ISS hulk will not be boarded before re-entry. The fuel reserves on the ISS do not allow immediate re-entry, although the onboard fuel can be used to transfer to fast-decaying (months lifetime) orbit.
Second, ISS has hundreds of communication subsystems. It is possible to corrupt some, especially voice/video communicators, but various telemetry systems still can be used to extract a forensic evidence.

Therefore, during story creation i thought it is possible to cause a confusion about what exactly happened, but fabrication of the reliable cover story posing as innocent is close to impossible, i.m.h.o.
