WI Marvel had the X-Men and Fox had the Avengers?

It's a switcheroo! Somehow, by the late 90s, Fox ends up with the rights to the Avengers, while the X-Men IP is held by Marvel.

What might a c. 2000 Avengers (sans build-up with solo movies) look like? Who would be the nominal viewpoint character a la Rogue - if there was one? What Avengers villain would make a good series Big Bad like Magneto in OTL? Who might get the director's seat? What actors would work? (assume the same characters as in the first OTL Avengers movie, for the sake of convenience)

Thoughts?

Well ironically the first thing I was thinking is would FOX go with the same line up? Might they want to make it more diverse from the get go with Black Panther and Carol Danvers Captain Marvel? Sticking to the standard lineup big loser is Robert Downey Junior, he was a gamble when Marvel picked him and I dont think lightning will strike twice, and since FOX made the Fantastic Four movies no Chris Evans as Captain America. In terms of the actual movie releases probably an Avengers move followed by a solo project with whoever turns out to be the 'breakout' character from that movie.

As far as Marvel and the X-Men goes, I think the MCU idea will never happen, with one of their big properties in hand there isn't going to be the impetus for it so you are likely to see a much more conservative approach with a release pattern similar to FOX's. As far as casting goes I actually still see Patrick Stewart as Professor X because he is just such an obvious choice for the part.

We will probably see more focus on other characters, and probably a built up to Wolverine. Showing his origins and teasing him before he shows up in the third movie.
Different take on female characters would also be present. No bastardization of the Phoenix Saga and Ororo would be the over dramatic weather goddess she was in the animated series.:D For casting I think Chris Evans would be good for Colossus or maybe even Cyclops (he certainly has the built for both characters). Famke Janssen could still play Jean, she was not a bad actress, she just had a bad script.
As for overall plot, I think they should start with a pre-X-Men, a prequel. Showing Charles and Erik meeting (he would probably be called Max now, if we follow the OTL timeline with FOX producing the Avengers first and Marvel/Disney producing the X-Men in the late 2000s) in Israel, later they move to San Francisco (like they did in Ultimate Marvel) where they create a Brotherhood of Mutant Prosperity but human hostility forces them to move to a mythical place (aka Savage Land) but, once there, the ideological differences between the two tear their friendship apart. (again like Ultimate) Charles would develop cancer and in the treatment lose his hair and be wheelchair-bound. In the end he would return home and decide to create the X-Men.
There would be a lot of cool fights and introduction of essential characters like Beast, Sinister, Mystique and younger versions of Cyclops, Storm and Jean.

No way Wolverine doesn't have a prominent role in the first X-Men regardless. Remember that this movie would be a gamble for Marvel, just like the early MCU movies were; they're going to want the most popular X-Man (which Wolverine already was) front-and-center in their marketing campaign. After all, if the first one bombs, there will be no second or third movie.

Wolverine would have an important role, but Cyclops would probably be the lead character. He usually was up until that point.
