WI: Marshall Mission to China Succeeds

I was originally going to put this in the ASB Thread, where it probably belongs, but I'm not sure if this is feasible.

If both Chiang and Mao die the moment WWII ends for whatever reason, what would the outcome of the Marshall Mission be? If it's necessary, you can give the other staunchly anti-unity people some heart attacks.

If you want to go back further, you can go back to Stillwell's removal (he was really anti-KMT and might have coordinated with the Communists).

The negotiations were kinda promising (except both sides didn't want to give up their advantages). Maybe the US is serious on threats to revoke aid if parties didn't comply and also serious on offers to give aid to compliant parties?

It did seem to come remarkably close to succeeding in early 1946. One reason for this is that both the GMD and CCP actually *wanted* a (temporary) cease-fire. Another is that neither wanted to take the blame for the mission's failure, so both made surprising concessions. Still, the only chance I can see for it succeeding in even the medium run would be if there had been much better US-Soviet relations--and even that would most likely only delay a resumption of civil war.
