WI: Mario Cuomo and Bill Bradley ran in 1992

Having both Cuomo and Bradley in the race is interesting as they could potentially split the Northeastern liberal vote which might help Clinton. Cuomo would be the stronger of the two, but he would have to run a great campaign in order to overcome Bradley's candidacy and win the nomination.

I could see Clinton doing really well here, in the primary anhways, and potentially making Bradley his VP choice as a means of siphoning off Cuomo's support to some extent. It would also be interesting to see what effect this has on the General Election, as Clinton (or whoever the candidate proved to be) would likely be more damaged from a prolonged primary battle, potentially opening up reelection for Bush or a split EC with Ross Perot.

If Clinton feels he needs to pick Bradley (or Cuomo), that would open up the ticket to further Republican attacks. One reason the ticket of two Southern centrists worked so well was that the GOP couldn't employ the same smears against liberalism that resulted in the landslide victories of 1984 and 1988. (This doesn't mean that a liberal couldn't have won. On the contrary, if an anti-NAFTA candidate had been nominated by the Dems it might have caused Perot to stay out of the race. Polling showed Clinton leading Bush with as much as 56% before Perot reentered in October; it's not unreasonable to think that a Democrat like Cuomo who runs against NAFTA while attacking high deficits (both of which were focal points of Perot's campaign*) might actually have done better than Clinton in the popular vote without Perot siphoning off his support).

*This is also what Cuomo had planned to run on before he ducked out of the '92 race at the last minute. Despite his reputation as a liberal champion, Cuomo built more of a moderate economic message in the lead-up to '92 according to Bush 41 biographer Jon Meacham.
